REMEX Flagship project in Asia

In Singapore REMEX Mineralstoff GmbH operates one of the most modern recycling facilities for the processing of municipal solid waste incinerator bottom ash (IBA) and recovery of metals. The IBA processing plant was officially opened in December 2015 by Singapore’s Minister for the Environment, Masagos Zulkifli. The new metal recovery plant was commissioned in July after having been built within a record period of just eight months. Equipped with cutting edge technology, it is a showcase project for the whole of Asia, answering the need for high-quality recycling solutions for the energy-from-waste industry.

First steps in the region

For the construction and operation of the facility, REMEX founded REMEX Minerals Singapore Pte. Ltd. This first REMEX subsidiary outside Europe has been contracted to operate on behalf of the National Environment Agency (NEA). Already operating similar facilities in the Netherlands and Germany, the company thus proves its international expertise. Environment Minister Masagos Zulkifli: "In Europe, REMEX is an established player in the recovery of metals from municipal solid waste incinerator bottom ash. I am confident that the company's experience will contribute to the success of this facility in the coming years."

High metal recovery rates, innovative processes

The new facility was built on a 1.4 hectare site in the TUAS district of Singapore. Here, REMEX processes around 600,000 tons of IBA per year originating from Singapore's four municipal solid waste incinerators. An expected 90 percent of ferrous metals and three quarters of the valuable non-ferrous metals such as aluminum and copper are recycled from the IBA. The high metal recycling rates are made possible through innovative processes in which even the smallest pieces of metals are filtered out of the ash. In this process, special magnets and micrograin eddy current separators are used in conjunction with multi-stage sieving techniques. There is no doubt that this plant will contribute significantly to the eminently important goal of a “Zero Waste Economy” in Singapore.

Milestone in an important plan

With this extremely powerful recycling plant, REMEX creates the ground for further international growth regarding IBA processing and the production of secondary aggregates from incinerator bottom ash. At the same time, we as a company present ourselves as a partner to those who are committed in their efforts towards becoming a Zero Waste Nation.
